Amos 2.0 - Part 1

In the wake of Amos' recent disastrous visit to the vet, I'm on a mission to transform into a happy and healthy cat -- Amos 2.0.

The first initiative is to get him to lose some weight. He is currently at 14.4 lbs, and according the vet, this is too heavy for a cat his age. I am surprised by this news since he doesn't look fat to me -- and I didn't really appreciate Dr. Duke's comment, "Chubby cats are so cute aren't they?"

Nonetheless, I'm following the doctor's orders and started Amos on a new diet last week. I have been feeding him wet food twice a day, supplemented by the usual dry food. Supposedly, by me feeding him only dry food, it has been the equivalent of me eating nothing but bagels. Oops.

Considering he'll put just about anything in his mouth, I was a little surprised that he was so picky about the flavors of the wet food, but can I really blame him? This stuff smells disgusting. After snubbing the chicken flavor, he is going crazy for the "salmon entree". And yes, I'm feeding him the snobby Nutro brand, because that's what type of dry food I buy.

Week 1 = Success

I tried to weigh him at home but he wouldn't stay still on the scale.

Indentity Theft

I think Amos stole my credit card last night in an attempt to steal my identity. I was sitting at the kitchen table and paying bills online. I got up a couple times to work on the meal I was making. When I did so, Amos would sneak over and start knocking things on the floor, in his usual fashion.

I had two credit cards sitting on the table amongst my papers... I later could only find one card.

I'll be keeping a close eye on my account.

Amos Goes to the Vet

Saturday was time for Amos to take his annual trip to the vet. As far as

animals at the vet go, he does a pretty good job at keeping his cool. I trick him into getting into the carrier by throwing treats into the carrier and shoving his ass in there.

The worst part for him (from what I can tell by his horrible howling) is the car ride there.

Once we get in to see Dr. Duke Amos is a "cool customer." He barely even flinched when the vet gave him his rabies shot.

Unfortunately, the doctor had some strict orders. Amos needs to lose some weight. At 14.4 pounds, he is at risk for developing diabetes later in life. Also, it turns out he has has some gingivitis going on.

Stay tuned to see how I'll be dealing with the doctor's orders.

Woman discovers her cat survived the Tsunami

While this video is completely in Japanese I think you get the point. A woman is showing a camera crew the destruction the tsunami caused only to find her cat was safe upstairs. It makes me want to cry just thinking about it. All these stories of families who gave up hope that their loved ones had survived, be they cat, dog or human, only to find that they beat the odds . . . it tugs on my heart strings.

It has also been reported that the human and cat residents of Tashiro Island (aka Cat Island) are okay and rescuers are working on getting people and cat food to the residents by helicopter.

Our thoughts are with all the cats, cat owners and other residents of Japan.

I sent just a couple St. Patrick's Day cat cards this year. One to my friend Dana. Her cat, Zissou, hasn't been feeling well lately. One to my friends Brian and Sara. Today is their anniversary. And one to my old boss. While I don't know what his opinion of cats, St. Patrick's Day is like Christmas for him.

I imagine that today my cats will feast on the vase of flowers on my dining room table. I fully expect to be cleaning up green puke when I get home.

Similar Name, Different Meaning

This is one of the cutest pictures ever because it contains two of my favorite animals. At one point a long time ago, when I had cable, I had to make myself stop watching Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet because it was making me too sad (it's a rough life out there in the Sahara).

A few years ago, my mom actually donated money in my honor to the Fellow Earthlings' Wildlife Center, which houses a bunch of meerkats out in the desert in California. Hopefully I will get to visit this wonderful place some day. :-)

Wednesday, March 9th = Fat Tuesday Recovery Day

Don't ever forget that your attention should be on your cat and nothing else. Even if the cat doesn't want you to pay attention to it at that moment you should be always be at the ready. Because as soon as you get on the phone or start your yoga exercises the cat will want to play.

I tried several years ago to put Washoo on a leash. She laid in the grass and wouldn't move. I never tried it with Laci. Mainly because she is terrified of the outdoors. Attempts to take Laci outside can result in severe scratches and/or being urinated on.
